A Gift From China was created so that we could support projects which serve China’s orphaned and abandoned children. Our store brings the best of Chinese arts & crafts to visitors to Shamian, many are families who pass through on their adoption journey. We are proud to use local artisans and tailors, which means that we supporting the local economy empowering women’s co-operatives and ensuring that our items are ethically produced.
In 2004 Store founder Samantha Jens handed over the services of A Gift From China to Jacqui Shurr director of The Good Rock Foundation. In 2008 Paula Crowder came alongside Jacqui as Co-Director of our store. Paula brings a wealth sales and design experience with her having worked in top luxury goods stores in the UK and Asia. Many of our latest products have been designed by Paula who works very closely with our artisan ladies both in China and Cambodia. Both Jacqui & Paula are volunteers.
Profits from our store go to support projects with organizations with whom we know and have a close association with.
Less than 1% of China’s orphan children are adopted overseas and we work to make a better life for those who remain. Over 80% of children in orphanages have special needs and/or disability.
